Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to lead its Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the country’s presidential election scheduled for March 15, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Office of the former President on Tuesday, March 10, the AU confirmed that Akufo-Addo will head the mission to monitor the electoral process in the Central African nation.
The mission is set to be deployed next week to observe the presidential polls and assess the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
According to the statement, the observation team will comprise members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee, representatives from the Pan-African Parliament, the African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organisations, and representatives of women’s and youth groups.
Akufo-Addo is expected to depart Accra on Friday, March 13, and return on March 18, 2026, after completing the assignment.
The AU’s election observation missions are aimed at promoting credible elections, strengthening democratic institutions, and supporting good governance across the continent.
