Akuapem North MP urges police to ensure peaceful conduct of Akwatia by-election

Sammy Awuku

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has called on the Ghana Police Service to guarantee a peaceful and intimidation-free Akwatia by-election.

Speaking to journalists in Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Mr. Awuku emphasized that the heavy deployment of security personnel should help maintain order during the voting process.

“With the heavy security presence in and around Akwatia, the election should be orderly as expected. We also hope that the police will play their role as protectors of the process and not become an instrument of intimidation,” he said.

Touching on claims of vote buying, he noted the challenge of substantiating such allegations but stressed the importance of vigilance. “We have various allegations of vote buying. But it’s difficult to sometimes get proof of some of these things. So, I don’t normally dwell on that. What we are concentrating our effort on is to make sure we’re vigilant. Our candidate has expressed some level of satisfaction with the process so far,” he stated.

Mr. Awuku further revealed that the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, was pleased with the conduct of the polls and expressed confidence in a favorable outcome.

“By the close of polls, we expect that the constituents should do what is right, and just by their conscience. I’m hoping that NPP’s candidate will emerge victorious at the end of the day,” he emphasized.
