The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofuom Constituency, Joseph Azumah, has paid for 50 Okada riders to acquire operational licences to enable them to operate legally in the area.
This initiative came to light when the MP covered the cost of the licences for the riders to help improve their work.
Speaking to Adom News correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo after the registration, Joseph Azumah said the era of giving handouts was over, adding that supporting riders to acquire legitimate licences was a more sustainable way of empowering them.
According to him, an amount of GH¢50,000, catered for by himself and the District Chief Executive (DCE), was deliberately invested to make the lives of the riders better.
The riders expressed excitement and gratitude, noting that Okada operations remain one of the few sustainable means of transportation on rural roads, and acquiring legal licences gives them peace of mind.
A staff of the DVLA, who was present, advised the riders to be cautious in their operations to avoid unnecessary accidents.
