AHPC engages GTEC over use of ‘Dr’ title by Allied Health Professionals

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) has responded to a recent directive by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) restricting the use of the title “Dr” as a prefix, assuring practitioners that steps are being taken to protect their professional identity.

In a statement dated August 20, 2025, the AHPC said it had formally engaged GTEC on the matter and called for broad consultation and collaboration to ensure allied health professionals receive the full recognition they deserve under the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857).

The Council proposed a stakeholder dialogue with GTEC and other relevant bodies to thoroughly address the concerns and find fair and constructive solutions.

It also encouraged all allied health professionals to remain steadfast in their duties and continue serving the public with diligence and professionalism, while assuring that the integrity of their qualifications will be safeguarded.

“The AHPC remains unwavering in its commitment to protect the interests of allied health professionals and will keep practitioners informed as discussions progress,” the statement, signed by Acting Registrar Dr. Shirazu Issahaku, said.
