Ahafo Youth unemployment reaching alarming levels – Labour Officer warns

-

The Labour Officer for the Ahafo Region, Simon Kwadwo Asare, has expressed concern over the rising rate of youth unemployment in the region, describing it as alarming and a potential threat to development.

Speaking to Adom News in Goaso, Mr. Asare observed that many young people are increasingly reluctant to invest time in acquiring employable skills through proper training.

“Instead of pursuing structured training, a significant number prefer quick-income ventures such as commercial motorcycle riding (okada) and tricycle operations (aboboyaa),” he said.

He added that some youths enrolled in apprenticeship programmes have abruptly abandoned their training to engage in commercial riding activities, which they believe provide faster financial returns.

Mr. Asare emphasized that one of the most effective ways to tackle youth unemployment is for young people to visit labour offices at district assemblies, where experts can guide them on job opportunities and career development paths.

He noted that while numerous job openings exist in the region, many applicants are unable to secure them due to a lack of required qualifications.

The Labour Officer urged parents to encourage their children to take education and skills development seriously, stressing that this is crucial for reducing unemployment and securing a better future for the youth.
