The Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, and the District Chief Executive for Asutifi North, Hafiz Dauda, are urging residents living around Newmont’s operational areas to resort to dialogue rather than protests when addressing grievances with the company.
The two made the appeal during a working visit to the Ahafo South Mine, where they emphasized the need for peaceful engagement between the company and the communities.
In an interview with Adom News, the Minister and DCE acknowledged that while some decisions by Newmont may not always meet the expectations of the host communities, dialogue remains the most constructive path toward resolution.
They cautioned that protests often result in property destruction and violent clashes, which harm both the communities and the company.
Madam Gardiner and Mr. Dauda also revealed that Newmont had raised concerns about illegal mining and the construction of speculative structures within the company’s concession. They assured that steps would be taken to tackle the issues.
Meanwhile, Newmont Africa’s Director of Social Performance, Joseph Danso, described the engagement with the regional officials as productive.
He noted that the visit provided an opportunity for the company to highlight long-standing challenges, particularly illegal intrusions and unauthorized developments that impede operations.
According to him, both the Regional Minister and DCE have pledged their support to help address these concerns, a move he believes will strengthen Newmont’s ability to fulfill its social responsibilities.
