Ahafo cocoa farmers warned against smuggling amidst disappointment over new price

The President of the Asunafo North Cooperative Cocoa Farmers Union, Nana Sarpong Emmanuel, has appealed to cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Region not to resort to smuggling or lease their farmlands to illegal miners despite disappointment over the newly announced cocoa price.

Speaking to Adom News at Goaso, Nana Sarpong admitted that many farmers were expecting GHS6,000 per bag, and the government’s price fell short of that expectation.

“Although our expectation of GHS6,000 wasn’t met concerning the new price announced by the government, it shouldn’t push us to embark on cocoa smuggling to Ivory Coast or give our farms to illegal miners for huge sums of money,” he said.

He warned of dire consequences associated with such illegal actions and urged farmers to exercise patience and act within the law.

Nana Sarpong expressed hope that future cocoa seasons could yield better prices and urged government to adjust the local price upward when international prices increase.

“If the price increases internationally, the government must not hesitate to also increase the price for farmers,” he stated.

He concluded with a call for calm, emphasizing that farmers must endure the current challenges without resorting to unlawful conduct.
