Africa Education Watch condemns killing of students at Nalerigu, Bawku SHSs

Civil society group Africa Education Watch has strongly condemned the violent attacks that led to the deaths of three students at Nalerigu Senior High School and Bawku Senior High School on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

In a statement issued on July 28, the organization described the incidents as a shocking violation of the sanctity of educational spaces and the right to life.

At Nalerigu SHS, two male students — Lukman and Gideon — were reportedly shot dead in their dormitory by armed assailants. On the same night, 18-year-old final-year student Hakim Kundima was abducted from his dormitory at Bawku SHS and later shot dead.

“These dreadful acts… have shocked the conscience of the nation,” the group said.

Africa Education Watch is calling on the government, the Ministry of Education, and security agencies to conduct swift investigations, provide protection for schools in conflict-prone areas, support peace efforts led by the Asantehene, and ensure affected students are able to write their WASSCE exams safely.

The group also urged the provision of psychosocial support to students and staff affected by the tragedies.

“Our thoughts are with the families of Lukman, Gideon, and Hakim. Their memory must inspire urgent action to protect all students,” the statement added.
