Afenyo-Markin petitions IGP over alleged assault by Constable Forson

-

The Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to investigate an alleged assault by a police officer during a demonstration on Monday, May 5.

In his petition, the lawmaker identified the police officer as Constable Forson, described as tall, fair, and heavily built.

According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, Constable Forson was assigned to provide security at the entrance of Parliament House during the protest.

He alleged that the officer physically assaulted him at the entrance of his designated post and has called for immediate disciplinary action.

The petition comes after the Ghana Police Service invited the MP to assist in investigations into an alleged assault on a police officer during the same demonstration.

This development follows the review of video footage from the protest — which has since gone viral on social media — allegedly showing the MP involved in a physical altercation with a police officer.

In a statement, the Police Service confirmed that preliminary analysis of multiple video recordings justified a formal investigation.

The Police emphasized that the probe aims to uphold professionalism, ensure accountability, and deliver justice for all parties involved.

However, Afenyo-Markin has described the move as “misleading narratives circulating in the public domain.”

“To address this incident and to correct misleading narratives… I have issued a public statement detailing the events as they occurred.”

He further expressed optimism that the IGP’s office will treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
