The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has dismissed calls for the removal of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, insisting the party remains confident in his leadership in Parliament.

His comments follow criticisms from some party supporters who argue that Mr Afenyo-Markin failed to sufficiently advance the campaign of the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the Effutu Constituency during the recent NPP presidential primary.

Critics have suggested that his posture on the ground may have contributed to Kennedy Agyapong’s strong showing in the constituency.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, Mr Boakye described the Effutu MP as a dependable and strategic leader at a time when the party needs firm direction.

“Hon Afenyo-Markin has been an outstanding leader, especially for us in these difficult times. He’s been very formidable in Parliament. In fact, for me, I would say it will be in the interest of the party for him to continue his work.

“The party is very happy with what he is doing, how he puts things together, and his leadership. We are satisfied with his performance. People are just running their own commentary,” he stated.

Results from Saturday’s NPP presidential primary show that Kennedy Agyapong dominated voting in the Effutu Constituency with 644 votes, while Dr Bawumia polled 79 votes. Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 32 votes.

Despite the constituency-level outcome, Dr Bawumia emerged victorious nationwide, securing 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent, to clinch the party’s ticket for the 2028 general elections.

Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent) respectively.

Mr Boakye maintained that despite the debate surrounding the Effutu results, the party’s leadership is satisfied with Mr Afenyo-Markin’s performance, stressing that stability in Parliament is critical as the NPP reorganises for the next electoral contest.
