Afenyo-Markin alleges use of DRIP equipment for galamsey

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the government of turning a blind eye to the misuse of equipment from the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP), which he claims is being diverted for illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He raised the concerns in Parliament on Monday, July 14, 2025, during a debate on the state of the economy.

“The government’s silence and inaction are enabling the destruction of the very resources needed to grow our economy,” he stated, urging swift intervention to protect the country’s natural assets.

The Effutu MP warned that the continued environmental damage from galamsey threatens to derail Ghana’s efforts to drive economic growth through agriculture.

“Mr. Speaker, if we do not deal with this galamsey issue, money is getting into the hands of people, and they are destroying the environment. In the long run, it is this same economy that will be affected.

“How do you sustain your economy when some environmental factors are affecting the very economy, and it is hand-to-mouth? Today, the DRIP machines that are supposed to be for our roads—some people are using them for galamsey—and there is no authority to even reprimand them. There is impunity,” he added.
