The Assembly Member for New Weija East, Sadiatu Issah, has denied allegations of illegal mining activities in the area, insisting that the appearance of Changfan machines on the Weija lake is to dredge the water body, remove silt, and help prevent flooding when the Weija Dam is spilled.
Speaking to Prince Owusu when Adom Trotro made a stop in the area, she said that before the work began, the MCE for Weija Gbawe led the project team to the area to inform residents of what was going to be done.
“It is not galamsey, that claim is false,” she said.
The contractor working on the project said work started on July 31 and that the aim is to clear all the islands that have formed in the waterway so the water can flow freely.
He explained that Changfan machines are not used only for galamsey but also serve as mini dredgers, noting that huge dredgers cannot be deployed yet given the current state of the site.
The Changfan machines, he said, are only being used to start the dredging process, with the main dredgers to follow later once conditions allow.
