Lawyer for former Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) Board Chairman, Paul Adom-Otchere, has described the bail conditions imposed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as unfair and deliberately restrictive.
Though Mr. Adom-Otchere was granted bail on Thursday after being questioned in connection with an ongoing investigation into a revenue assurance audit contract, he remains in custody.
This is due to his inability to meet the OSP’s requirement of providing two landed properties registered in his name as surety for his release.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, Nicholas Lenin Anane Agyei argued that the bail conditions were designed to unjustly prolong his client’s detention.
“It is unreasonable in the context of bail to require an accused person to produce properties in his own name. What the OSP is essentially saying is that persons who lack property or are poor people in this country cannot make bail,” he said.
Mr. Agyei added that the condition was especially unfair given that the OSP had prior knowledge that his client did not own any landed property.
“The shocking fact is that while taking the profile of the suspect, the suspect indicated that he does not own any landed property. So for the OSP to set two landed properties in his name as a precondition for bail, it is essentially concluding to hang him and detain him. We find the bail condition very unreasonable,” he stressed.
The lawyer further vowed that Mr. Adom-Otchere’s legal team would exhaust all legal options to secure his release.
“We will explore all legal avenues to ensure that Mr. Adom-Otchere is freed,” he emphasised.
