Former Black Queens captain Adjoa Bayor has applauded the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for significantly increasing the prize money for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
CAF announced a 100% increase in the tournament’s top prize and a 45% rise in the overall prize pool ahead of the competition’s kickoff.
Bayor, a long-time advocate for women’s football, welcomed the move, describing it as a bold investment in the women’s game.
“There is a big difference from an organizational point of view as well as financially speaking,” she told CAFOnline.
“The prize money is now up to $1 million. That is massive from CAF,” she added.
Ghana, returning to WAFCON for the first time since 2018, began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to South Africa on Monday.
The Black Queens will aim to bounce back when they face Mali in their second Group C encounter on Friday, July 11, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.
Kickoff is set for 16:00 GMT.
