Clement Opoku Gyamfi, legal counsel for Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has confirmed that his client has been charged with the offence of publishing false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the lawyer explained that Kumi’s arrest is linked to recent statements he made in media interviews, posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account, and a petition submitted to the presidency regarding the committee probing the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
According to lawyer Gyamfi, Kumi was interrogated in his presence, and a formal caution statement was taken.
He added that a bail application has been submitted and they are currently awaiting a response from the investigating authorities.
“We are hopeful he will be granted bail because the charge, in our view, is a misdemeanor and does not warrant continued detention,” he stated.
Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant in Adentan, was picked up by NIB operatives at dawn on Friday.
His arrest has since drawn criticism from the NPP, which has accused the current NDC administration of targeting opposition voices.
The arrest comes in the wake of a petition Kumi addressed to President John Mahama, calling for the disbandment of the committee investigating the Chief Justice.
In the petition, he alleged misconduct by some committee members that he claims could affect the integrity of the process.
