The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned Ghanaian retailers to seek redress in court over issues with foreigners in retail business in Ghana.
According to the Police, they will not allow the aggrieved worker unions to take the law into their own hands.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, monitored by Adomonline.com, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwaku Boadu Preprah, said the problem could best be dealt with through a legal process.
“We re-opened about 17 shops and we have the padlocks. I am on the side of the rule of law. What the law says is exactly what we are doing. They don’t have the right to go and lock somebody’s shop. If they want to lock the shops, they should go to court,” he stated.
The comments of the regional police commander follow allegations by the Ghana Union of Traders Association of inhumane treatment meted out to members of the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association on Wednesday over the locking up of shops belonging to Nigerians in Kumasi.
