Veteran Kumawood actor Papa Kumasi has recounted a terrifying experience in which he narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry crowd at Buokrom in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking in an interview, the actor revealed that the incident occurred while he had accompanied a friend who had gone to retrieve a mobile phone he had previously bought for a woman.
According to Papa Kumasi, he was seated, waiting for his friend, when events unexpectedly took a dramatic turn.
“I accompanied my friend and while I was sitting and waiting, a lady came to sit beside me. She was arguing with someone on the phone. Not long after, a man rushed towards us and she took to her heels. The man then turned to me and accused me of being the one encouraging her to insult him,” he narrated.
Papa Kumasi alleged that before he could explain himself, the man attacked him with two resounding slaps.
“He didn’t even hear my side of the story and landed me a hot slap. As I tried to calm him down, he slapped me again. At that moment, I knew if I didn’t act quickly, I would be overpowered, so I also slapped him back.”
But what followed, according to him, became a nightmare as the aggressor labeled him a thief while calling for backup.
Papa Kumasi said the crowd descended on him without asking questions.
“They really beat me. Some wielded stones and others came with wood. It became a bloody scene. Nobody wanted to listen,” he recalled.
Adding to his distress, he said the friends he had accompanied abandoned him.
The actor said he managed to break free and run for safety before an unexpected person recognised him and came to his rescue.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Papa Kumasi suggested the experience could have ended differently had someone not stepped in, the reason he is always cautious of a one-sided story.
