The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has introduced a new shift system for street sweepers to improve sanitation and enhance efficiency across the capital.
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced the initiative during a meeting with sweepers on Wednesday, explaining that the new arrangement would restructure working hours to better suit workers’ needs while increasing productivity.
Under the system, street sweepers will be divided into two groups—morning and afternoon shifts—with working hours scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Mayor said the decision was influenced by challenges faced by some workers, particularly the elderly and those who struggle to report early for duty. He noted that the revised structure would create flexibility while ensuring that sanitation efforts are sustained throughout the day.
He added that the move aims to maximise output without compromising workers’ well-being, stressing that aligning duties with individual strengths would lead to a cleaner and more organised city.
However, the Mayor cautioned that the new system would be strictly enforced. Any worker who fails to perform assigned duties risks sanctions, including salary reductions or removal from the payroll.
He emphasised that the Assembly would not tolerate inefficiency, noting it is unfair for committed workers to carry the burden while others fail to contribute effectively.
