The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to build an operating theatre at the Kaneshie Polyclinic before the end of 2026, in a bid to strengthen healthcare delivery across the metropolis.

The announcement was made by Accra Mayor Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey during an unannounced visit to the facility on Tuesday, February 3, to assess its operational challenges and immediate needs.

According to the Mayor, management of the polyclinic identified the lack of an operating theatre as a major constraint affecting service delivery.

“They spoke to us about a few challenges they are facing, which have to do with the theatre, and we are going to help. We promised to do that one first before we do anything else. Once in a while, we will pass through and assess the place and find out from them what they need assistance with so we can provide them with results,” he said.

Mayor Allotey noted that the AMA is committed to prioritising the construction of the theatre before undertaking other projects at the facility.

The proposed operating theatre is expected to significantly enhance the medical capacity of the Kaneshie Polyclinic, bridge existing service gaps, and improve access to surgical care for residents within the Accra metropolitan area.
