Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has issued a public apology following a recent confrontation with an officer from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) over unauthorized parking in the Central Business District.
Addressing journalists during his routine monitoring of the ongoing decongestion exercise, the Mayor clarified that his actions were not intended to target the Police Service but were aimed at ensuring the enforcement of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) bylaws.
“I sincerely apologize for how the situation unfolded. My objective was to uphold the integrity of the decongestion exercise and ensure that no one, including state officials, undermines it,” he said.
The incident reportedly occurred when the Mayor intervened in a situation where some drivers were allegedly allowed to park and load passengers at unapproved locations under the watch of a police officer.
According to the Mayor, such actions undermine the Assembly’s continuous efforts to bring order to the city’s roadways.
Returning to the same spot where the confrontation occurred, Mayor Allotey said his visit was to demonstrate that the law is being applied fairly and consistently.
“You can see today I’m back here again to the same place where the incident happened. The officer wasn’t doing the right thing, and people are still here today because of that,” he stated.
The Mayor reiterated that the AMA is committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service, to ensure that Accra becomes a city where vehicles and pedestrians can move freely and safely.
