The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a new incentive scheme offering a GH₵500 reward to individuals who report sanitation offenders, as part of renewed efforts to improve environmental conditions and reduce flooding in the capital.

In a Facebook post on April 2, the Mayor said the initiative is aimed at tackling practices such as dumping waste into drains, indiscriminate littering, and open defecation.

According to him, informants who provide credible information leading to the identification and prosecution of offenders under existing Assembly by-laws will receive the cash reward.

Mr Allotey made the remarks during an inspection tour of parts of Kaneshie, including Dzorshie Crescent, where he assessed drainage systems and the underlying causes of recurrent flooding.

He explained that the policy is intended to encourage residents to take an active role in sanitation enforcement.

The Mayor identified poor waste disposal habits as a major contributor to flooding in the city, noting that plastics, discarded clothing, and other debris often clog gutters and storm drains.

“These obstructions prevent the free flow of water and lead to flooding during heavy rains,” he indicated.

He assured residents that steps are already being taken to address the problem, including the award of contracts for drainage improvement works in affected communities.

Mr Allotey pledged that the interventions would be fast-tracked to bring relief to residents who have endured years of flooding.

Beyond enforcement measures, he stressed the need for shared responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.

He urged the public to comply with sanitation regulations and report offenders, stressing that collaboration between residents and authorities is crucial.

Authorities believe that stronger community involvement, combined with enforcement, will play a key role in preventing future flooding and improving safety across the city.
