A serious road accident at the Ofankor barrier on the Accra-bound section of the Accra–Achimota highway early Tuesday, August 5, 2025, has caused massive traffic congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
The crash involved two cargo trucks traveling in opposite directions—one heading towards Accra from the Pokuase stretch and the other en route to Pokuase.
Eyewitnesses described the impact as severe, with one of the trucks splitting into two due to the head-on collision. Despite the intensity of the crash, one of the drivers escaped unhurt and was later seen attempting to salvage diesel from the wreckage.
The situation worsened when another driver, in a bid to maneuver around the accident scene, got stuck, blocking the main access road and further deepening the traffic gridlock.
Although the exact cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, preliminary reports suggest that one of the drivers may have either dozed off or swerved to avoid a pothole.
Personnel from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) were quickly deployed to manage the traffic situation. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to tow the wrecked trucks and restore normal traffic flow along the busy stretch.
