Ablekuma North rerun: Akua Afriyie vows to participate despite NPP’s boycott

The Ablekuma North New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has declared her intention to participate in the rerun of 19 polling stations scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.

Her announcement comes barely 24 hours before the election, despite the NPP’s public declaration to boycott the process.

In an interview during a last-minute campaign, the former MP said her decision was motivated by a desire to defend her victory in the 2024 parliamentary election.

She expressed confidence that divine intervention would secure her a win.

“I appeal to all the constituents to come out and vote massively for me so the glory of God will manifest. I have put my trust in God, and I know He will not disappoint me. I won the election by 440 votes, and I believe God will let the truth prevail tomorrow,” she stated.

The Electoral Commission scheduled the rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency following disruptions during the December 2024 elections that prevented the collation of final results.

The NPP has since described the rerun as illegal and in contempt of court, insisting it would not participate.

However, an injunction application filed at the Accra High Court to halt the EC’s decision was dismissed on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The party is yet to publicly rescind its decision to boycott the poll.
