
The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed that the police officer who slapped journalist Kwabena Banahene Agyekum during the Ablekuma North rerun has formally been charged with assault.
This was contained in a statement that provided an update on investigations into the violence that marred the election on Friday, July 11, 2025.
“In line with due process, the police officer captured in one of the videos assaulting a journalist, who was interdicted, has been held on criminal charges of assault.
“The police have reviewed and are analysing several videos that captured the incidents at the polling stations to identify all persons involved,” the statement read in part.
The Command added that it has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations.
“The police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon. Meanwhile, the victims involved in the incidents have been issued police medical report forms,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law.
“We encourage the public to cooperate with the police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” it urged.
