The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has begun the demolition of the Darkuman slum market as part of plans to construct an ultramodern trading facility in the area.
The exercise, which started at dawn, saw over 140 makeshift structures pulled down. Many affected traders and residents were seen salvaging what they could from the debris as they counted their losses.
According to the Assembly, prior notice was given to all occupants, but some traders ignored the directive to vacate the site ahead of the scheduled demolition.
Municipal authorities say the move is part of efforts to decongest the area and improve trading conditions once the new market complex is completed.
Officials have assured that affected traders will be given priority when the new market is opened to the public.
