The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has directed his outfit to cancel plans for a surprise welcome at the airport following his recent diplomatic success at the United Nations.
The planned reception, reportedly organised by staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was intended to celebrate Ablakwa’s role in tabling and advancing a slavery-related resolution at the United Nations.
The initiative forms part of a long-standing tradition within the Ministry to honour officials who achieve significant milestones for the country on the global stage.
However, in a statement ahead of his return to Ghana, Ablakwa expressed appreciation for the gesture but firmly instructed that the arrangement be called off.
He noted that the achievement should not be viewed as a personal victory.
“This is not a personal victory, and besides, there is more work ahead of us,” he stated, adding that he would have opposed the idea if he had been consulted.
He commended staff of the Ministry for their dedication and professionalism, describing them as “dynamic and talented,” while urging them to remain focused on advancing Ghana’s interests internationally.
Ablakwa also emphasised the need for national unity and collective effort in sustaining Ghana’s progress on the global stage, expressing optimism about the country’s diplomatic direction under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
