The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), questioning the impartiality of the Commission’s leadership.

In a series of Facebook posts, Mr Aboagye accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of setting a bad precedent by appointing what he described as an openly partisan political operative to a senior position at the electoral management body.

“This has never happened before in the history of our dear country’s democracy, that an open partisan political operative, who was and is a campaign team member of a political party, has been appointed to come and be a deputy chair to the independent Electoral Commission,” he wrote.

He argued that the appointment could undermine Ghana’s democratic credentials, accusing the NDC of putting the country’s democratic progress at risk.

Mr Aboagye also questioned whether the governing party lacked other qualified individuals who could serve in the position without raising concerns about political affiliation.

“Becos this is becoming embarrassing… What a bad precedent… a full-blown open NDC campaign team member and political operative as EC deputy chair?” he added.

He further suggested that the appointment could set a precedent for future governments to appoint party loyalists to leadership positions at the Electoral Commission.

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission, filling vacancies left by the exit of Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey.

The appointments complete the vacancies in the Commission’s leadership.
