Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga has challenged banks to take a more active role in maintaining and beautifying public spaces across Ghana.

Addressing heads of banks at a meeting, Mr Ayariga said financial institutions possess the resources, nationwide presence and corporate social responsibility to make a real difference in creating cleaner, greener and more inviting communities.

He suggested that selected streets could be renamed to reflect partnerships between banks and society, after which the institutions would be encouraged to adopt and maintain those streets.

According to the Minister, such a collaboration would strengthen ties between government, the private sector and citizens while enhancing the look of communities.

“I believe that banks have the resources, the reach, and the responsibility to help keep our public spaces clean, green, and welcoming,” he said.

Mr Ayariga stressed that the proposal would be driven by partnership, not compulsion. He assured the bankers that the Ministry would work with them to design a transparent and sustainable framework for the initiative.

The overall goal, he added, is to foster a society in which every institution and every citizen understands their part in national development.
