Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu says he is unaware of any plans by former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew to contest for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Speculation has grown in recent months that Ayew could enter football administration and eventually seek to lead the country’s governing body after his playing career.
However, Agyemang-Badu, who played alongside Ayew for several years with the Black Stars, says he has no knowledge of such ambitions.
Speaking to Pulse Ghana, the former Udinese midfielder said it would be difficult to rule out any possibility about Ayew’s future.
“When I was growing up, my dad told me that there is no position that, if people said you need to contest or take, I should say, ‘No, no, no, I don’t want it’. I don’t know tomorrow,” Agyemang-Badu said.
“What I say today, tomorrow people will use it against you.
“Even me right now, if you tell me I will be President in Ghana, I will say yes, it’s possible. Because after 10, 15 or 20 years, I don’t know.”
Agyemang-Badu also referred to comments from former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel, who has previously spoken highly of Ayew’s leadership qualities.
“If somebody says something about Andre Dede Ayew, Mikel Obi is a well-experienced guy. He knows Andre very well. Maybe he has seen something about him,” he added.
Despite the speculation, Agyemang-Badu stressed that he had not discussed any potential GFA presidential ambitions with Ayew.
“For him standing at the FA as president, I don’t know. I don’t know his ambitions. If he wants to stand, it’s free,” he said.
“Tomorrow I can even pick forms, provided that the laws of the game fit me to be a contestant. There’s absolutely nothing wrong.
“I don’t know his ambitions for now. But somebody like Mikel Obi, if he has brought something up like this and speaks highly of Andre Dede Ayew, it’s a plus for him.
“The D-Day will come, and we will see what will happen.”
Both Andre Ayew and Agyemang Badu were instrumental in Ghana winning the U-20 World Cup against Brazil in 2009.
