Women’s groups from the two main political parties in the Bono East Region have taken opposing positions on the arrest of Salomey Awitti Baffoe, who police say helped spread videos produced by the TikToker known as “Ghana Jollof”.
On Friday evening, before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) held its press briefing on the case, a group of women in the Kintampo South District condemned Ms Baffoe’s alleged link to Ghana Jollof.
The group, led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Women Organiser, Cecelia Adai, said their concern was sharper because the First Lady is from the area.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region took a different line as the party’s Bono East Regional Women Organiser, Sophia Afriyie Danso, said the days when women were maltreated under the Rawlings era were returning.
During a health walk organised by the Kintampo North NPP, she urged women to rise up because traders’ businesses are collapsing.
She further appealed to First Lady Lordina Mahama to intervene in the issue.
Police say Ms Baffoe, a nurse based in Techiman, assisted in spreading videos produced by Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, believed to be in the United Kingdom, by recruiting others.
She has been charged with abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news, and remanded into police custody. She is due back in court on 30 September.
