The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has called on the Finance Minister to make adequate budgetary provision for the Rent Control Department in the 2027 Budget.
According to him, housing and rent control must be treated as national priorities, particularly given the challenges many Ghanaians face in securing affordable accommodation.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Frederick Opoku said the government must make a conscious effort to ensure that institutions responsible for regulating the rental sector have the resources needed to operate effectively.
“If the Finance Minister cares about the citizens, he should allocate resources in the 2027 Budget to address where people will sleep. We must prioritise housing and rent control, and this should be a conscious effort,” he said.
He explained that the department faces logistical and operational challenges that affect its ability to effectively carry out its mandate.
Mr Opoku is therefore appealing for adequate funding, vehicles, and technological equipment to enable the department to work efficiently.
“We need money, vehicles, and gadgets to work effectively. Rent Control must be treated as an important entity in this country,” he noted.
He believes strengthening the Rent Control Department will help improve regulation of the rental sector and provide better support for tenants and landlords.
