A suspected armed robber has been killed by the Accra Regional Police Command in a gunfight with the Police near Agbogbloshie.
The police also recovered an AK-47 rifle with 186 rounds of ammunition.
The incident happened at Galoway on Thursday, September 10, after police received intelligence that four armed men on two motorbikes were heading to a Shell filling station in the area to carry out a robbery.
A team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, backed by the Operational Unit, moved in and encountered the suspects at the Galoway Police Barrier.
The two sides exchanged gunfire during which one suspect was shot while the other three abandoned their motorbikes and fled.
Police recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, serial number 79-HF-3014, fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of ammunition, from the injured suspect. They also recovered 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition from him.
The suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy.
Two unregistered motorbikes, a Royal and an Apsonic, were also retrieved and have been retained alongside the firearm and ammunition as exhibits.
The Accra Regional Police Command said efforts were underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances of the planned robbery, adding that it would continue intelligence-led operations to combat armed robbery and other violent crimes.
