Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has been tasked with leading the Black Stars back to the Africa Cup of Nations after the team missed the 2025 tournament.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said qualification for the 2027 AFCON is the immediate priority for the 73-year-old Portuguese coach.
Queiroz has been rewarded with a contract extension after guiding Ghana to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup in North America – the first time the Black Stars have reached that stage since 2010.
He was initially appointed on a four-month contract in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.
Ghana are due to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign later this month, having been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
“We had discussions before we concluded extending Carlos Queiroz’s contract, but the task is to guide the Black Stars back to the AFCON next year,” Asante Twum told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“We were not there last year, and we cannot afford to miss out this time around.”
The Black Stars will open their qualifying campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September.
They will then return home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their qualifying group, failing to win any of their six matches.
