Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has confirmed his decision to continue as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars after agreeing a contract extension with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The 73-year-old’s initial four-month contract expired after Ghana reached the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Colombia.
Queiroz was appointed in March following the dismissal of Otto Addo and has now agreed to continue in the role after talks involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Portuguese coach.
The GFA is yet to announce the duration of the new contract, with further details expected in the coming days.
In a statement confirming his decision to stay, Queiroz described leading Ghana as a responsibility that extends beyond football.
“It is with immense pride and honour that I confirm my continuation as Head Coach of the Black Stars of Ghana.
“Serving Ghana is far more than coaching a football team. It is a privilege, a responsibility and a mission to honour one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its incredible and passionate football people.”
The former Portugal, Iran and Egypt coach also praised the players and technical staff for their efforts during the World Cup campaign.
“Their courage, discipline and commitment restored belief, competitiveness and the pride of a nation.
“Now, a new chapter begins,” he said.
Queiroz said his immediate priority would be Ghana’s qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which he sees as an important foundation for the country’s longer-term ambitions.
“Our ambition is clear: improve every day, unite the nation, make Ghana stronger and fight for every victory with passion, humility and pride,” he said.
Under Queiroz, Ghana advanced from Group L at the 2026 World Cup after defeating Panama, drawing 0-0 with England and losing to Croatia.
The Black Stars subsequently reached the knockout stage but were eliminated by Colombia following a 1-0 defeat.
Ghana will now turn their attention to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, beginning with an away fixture against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24.
They will then host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
Queiroz will be expected to use his extensive international experience to guide Ghana’s rebuilding process and help restore the Black Stars among Africa’s leading football nations, while also laying the groundwork for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
