Teacher unions have called off their planned strike following an engagement with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, over concerns surrounding the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales.
The decision follows assurances and concrete measures agreed upon at a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the various teacher unions to resolve the issue.
One of the key resolutions from the meeting is that teachers will not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for the purpose of salary-scale placement.
The Ministry of Education also disclosed that close to 80,000 teachers will be appropriately placed on their correct salary scales as part of the process.
Under the agreed arrangement, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to provide the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department with the requisite data to facilitate the necessary adjustments and payments to affected teachers.
The resolution is expected to ease concerns among teachers who had threatened industrial action over what they described as challenges with their placement on the appropriate salary scales.
The Ministry of Education has expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions for what it described as their constructive engagement and commitment to resolving the matter in the interest of Ghana’s education system.
It further assured that it remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that teachers receive their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
