New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, has disclosed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor played a significant role in influencing his decision to contest the party’s National Chairmanship position.

According to Mr Agyarko, former President Kufuor had, for about seven consecutive years, encouraged him to abandon his presidential ambitions and consider seeking the chairmanship of the party instead.

“President Kufuor has been one of the brains behind my quest to become National Chairman. For about seven continuous years, he was urging me to contest,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Agyarko said his relationship with the former President dates back to their childhood, having grown up in the same town.

“Me and Kufuor grew up in the same town. We even thought he was our brother. We have been friends since then,” he stated.

He revealed that about seven years ago, Mr Kufuor advised him to put his presidential ambition on hold and instead focus on becoming National Chairman of the NPP.

“Seven years ago, he called me to halt my presidential ambition to contest for chairman of the party. So, the day I decided to contest for the chairmanship, I went to him and told him,” Mr Agyarko said.

He also disclosed that he subsequently informed former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about his decision to contest the position.

Mr Agyarko described former Presidents Kufuor and Akufo-Addo as important repositories of the NPP’s history and traditions, saying their experience would be valuable to whoever leads the party.

“Between Akufo-Addo and Kufuor is about 50 years of NPP tradition in them. So, if you want to lead your party, that’s your resource. They will guide you,” he said.

He pledged that if elected National Chairman, he would regularly seek the counsel and guidance of the two former Presidents to help steer the party in the right direction.

“So me as chairman, I will go to them for advice and guidance. They are the big resources in our party,” he added.

Mr Agyarko said the experience of the party’s former leaders should be utilised in rebuilding the NPP and positioning it to regain power in the 2028 general elections.
