Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku says the appointment of a new Black Stars head coach is nearly complete, with only final paperwork remaining before an official announcement is made.
The senior national team has been without a substantive coach since Carlos Queiroz’s short-term contract expired following the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician was appointed on a four-month deal earlier this year, replacing Otto Addo ahead of the tournament in North America, where Ghana reached the knockout stage for the first time since 2010.
With the Black Stars due to regroup next month for the start of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, Okraku said the federation is close to confirming its new coach.
“Ghana will have a coach before we regroup. The coach who will lead the Black Stars is 99% in place. The coach who will lead the Black Stars is already working,” Okraku told 3Sports.
He added that discussions had progressed to the final stage, with only formal procedures left to complete.
“We are just at that last line where we have to sign papers and formalise the relationship. We have machinery in place; we are working,” he said.
Okraku declined to reveal the identity of the coach, leaving uncertainty over whether Queiroz could remain in charge or if the GFA has opted for a different candidate.
The new coach will be expected to build on Ghana’s recent World Cup campaign while guiding the four-time African champions back to continental success.
Ghana, who have not won the AFCON title since 1982, will begin their qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast in Group C.
The match is scheduled for 24 September 2026 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, with kick-off set for 19:00 GMT.
The Black Stars will also face Somalia and The Gambia as they seek qualification for the tournament to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027.
