Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be demolished and rebuilt, arguing that the country’s national stadium requires more than short-term repairs ahead of major international football tournaments.
The lawmaker made the call after touring the stadium, where he said he witnessed extensive deterioration that raised concerns about its readiness to host next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Kyere-Duah said the stadium’s appearance during televised night matches masked the scale of the problems inside the facility.
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent. But when you take a deep tour, as we’ve done, then you realise we have a very long way to go,” he said.
He urged authorities to respond quickly to the challenges identified during the inspection.
Rather than continuing piecemeal renovations, the MP said Ghana should replace the existing structure with a modern stadium that meets FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana’s capital, Accra, to host FIFA and CAF-sanctioned matches,” he said.
Kyere-Duah described the condition of the stadium as “terrible” and said the situation required urgent action.
The Accra Sports Stadium has long been one of Ghana’s flagship sporting venues, hosting major domestic competitions as well as international matches.
Its current state has renewed concerns over the country’s ability to provide venues that meet international requirements, with Ghana preparing to host the U-20 AFCON while also staging AFCON qualifying fixtures.
