Residents and businesses across dozens of communities in Accra should brace for a lengthy power cut this Sunday, August 23, as engineers move to fix a transmission tower damaged in a tanker explosion.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) says the fault occurred on the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line at Ashaiman, after a fuel tanker caught fire while welding work was being carried out nearby, damaging a key component of the high-voltage network.

Repairs will run from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the outage is expected to hit a wide swathe of the capital, cutting across both residential neighbourhoods and busy commercial hubs.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has grouped the affected areas into two zones. The first covers Nima, Kanda (Highway and Estate), Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina, Okponglo, Cantonments, Osu Oxford Street, Mallam Atta Market, parts of Ridge, Labone and Teshie Rasta Road, among others.

The second zone takes in James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Sempe, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo and Asylum Down.

Both GRIDCo and ECG have apologised for the disruption, with GRIDCo saying its technical teams need the full window to safely complete the tower replacement and restore the line’s integrity. The utility added that it is working with ECG to soften the impact on customers in the affected communities.
