Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commended the outgoing Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Ghana, Mariana Gonçalves Madeira, for her role in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Ghana and Brazil.
During a farewell meeting, the Vice President, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Madeira for her dedicated service and efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries during her tenure.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang praised the ambassador for advancing bilateral ties across several sectors and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to sustaining the strong relationship with Brazil.
Ambassador Madeira, in turn, reflected on Ghana’s progress and commended the Mahama administration’s efforts to strengthen the country’s economy.
She described Ghana as an important strategic partner for Brazil and expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in agriculture and agribusiness, energy, security and defence, trade and social development.
The Vice President highlighted opportunities for increased partnership in the energy sector, particularly through collaboration with Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, as Ghana seeks to expand its energy capacity and attract investment.
She noted that the relationship between Ghana and Brazil extends beyond diplomatic engagement, pointing to the deep historical and cultural ties forged through centuries of interaction across the Atlantic.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also acknowledged Brazil’s support for Ghana on several international initiatives, including cooperation on the United Nations resolution on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, and programmes promoting women’s empowerment and social development.
She further commended Ambassador Madeira for broadening diplomatic engagement through partnerships with institutions such as the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ga Traditional Council and initiatives aimed at improving food security and social welfare.
The Vice President wished the outgoing ambassador success in her future diplomatic assignments and expressed confidence that Ghana would continue to strengthen its relationship with Brazil under her successor.
She said the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepening cooperation and building partnerships that deliver lasting benefits for the people of Ghana and Brazil.
