The People’s National Party (PNP) has announced that it will participate in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned demonstration on Thursday, August 6, citing the need to defend democracy, the rule of law and the constitutional rights of all Ghanaians.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, the party said democracy can only flourish when justice is applied fairly, freedom of expression is protected and citizens receive equal treatment under the law, regardless of their political affiliation.
PNP Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, expressed concern over what the party described as growing perceptions of selective justice in Ghana.
The party alleged that cases involving opposition figures often receive more aggressive attention than those involving individuals associated with the governing party.
According to the PNP, such perceptions could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and the justice system.
The party also criticised what it described as the intimidation of women for exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression, arguing that no citizen should face arrest, prosecution or harassment for expressing their views in a democratic society.
The PNP further claimed that inflammatory political comments from some quarters are sometimes left unpunished, creating the impression of unequal application of the law.
“The defence of democracy is not about protecting any political party. It is about protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of every Ghanaian,” the statement said.
The party maintained that democracy risks losing public trust when citizens believe justice is applied selectively and people are not treated equally before the law.
It reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, impartial justice and constitutional governance, saying it stands with all Ghanaians who believe the rule of law must apply equally to everyone.
