The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to review Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz’s technical report and decide on his future during a crucial meeting on Friday, July 31.
The Portuguese coach, who replaced Otto Addo in April, guided Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Ghana began their Group L campaign with a 1-0 win over Panama before securing a goalless draw against England. Although the four-time African champions lost 2-1 to Croatia in their final group match, they advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
However, the Black Stars’ World Cup journey came to an end in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Following the tournament, Queiroz submitted his technical report to the GFA, with the Executive Council set to assess the team’s performance and consider the recommendations presented by the 73-year-old coach.
The meeting is also expected to determine whether the experienced Portuguese tactician will continue as head coach of the senior national team.
Questions over Queiroz’s future grew after Ghana’s elimination from the World Cup, following a social media post that was widely interpreted as a farewell message.
The former Portugal and Iran coach, however, later dismissed reports of his resignation, explaining that the post was simply an appreciation message to Ghanaians for their support during the tournament.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly backed Queiroz to remain in charge, arguing that continuity could help the team compete strongly in future tournaments.
“I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions,” Mahama said during an inspection visit to the Ho Sports Stadium.
If retained, Queiroz’s immediate task will be to lead Ghana’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars have been drawn in a group alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia and Somalia, with the qualifying campaign set to begin in September as Ghana seeks a return to the continental showpiece after missing the previous edition.
