The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government is awaiting financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit an additional 8,000 nurses this year.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Minister said nearly 100,000 qualified nurses remain unemployed and are awaiting posting.
He explained that the government has already recruited 8,000 nurses and plans to recruit a total of 16,000 this year to help address staffing shortages and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
Mr. Akandoh further revealed that the government is making advanced arrangements to facilitate employment opportunities for some unemployed Ghanaian nurses abroad.
“We are collaborating with a number of countries to deploy some of our nurses to work there. Currently, we have more than 46 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) under consideration,” he said.
According to the Minister, the initiative will not only create employment opportunities for Ghanaian nurses but also generate foreign exchange for the country while enhancing international cooperation in the health sector.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, commended the government for the measures being taken to strengthen the healthcare system and improve hospital management.
He urged the Ministry of Health to continue working closely with stakeholders to enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services nationwide.
