Asante Kotoko Executive Board Chairman James Osei Brown has met with Hearts of Oak Board Chairman Togbe Afede XIV in a high-level engagement aimed at strengthening cooperation between Ghana’s two most successful football clubs.
The meeting, which brought together leaders of the two traditional giants, is seen as a major step towards improving collaboration between the Kumasi-based club and their Accra rivals as they prepare for the 2026/27 Ghana football season.
Discussions reportedly focused on ways the two clubs can work together to address some of the key commercial, administrative and structural challenges affecting domestic football.
Both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have been exploring ways to modernise their operations, improve their revenue streams and build stronger institutional frameworks capable of competing at a higher level.
Areas identified for potential collaboration include attracting sponsorship deals, improving matchday security and safety standards, and supporting efforts to establish an independent Ghana Premier League entity.
The latest engagement builds on previous cooperation between the two clubs, including their joint petition to the Ghana Football Association in February 2025 over concerns about stadium safety and matchday management.
Although the discussions signal a willingness to collaborate off the pitch, the fierce rivalry between the two clubs is expected to continue whenever they meet on the field.
The meeting comes after contrasting fortunes for the two sides in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign. Hearts of Oak finished third on the league table with 54 points, while Asante Kotoko endured a difficult season, ending the campaign in eighth position with 49 points.
Kotoko have since begun preparations for a stronger return by appointing South African tactician Eric Tinkler as head coach, with the club hoping to challenge for honours in the new season.
The Super Clash between Kotoko and Hearts remains one of the biggest football rivalries on the African continent, attracting huge attention from supporters and stakeholders every time the two clubs meet.
Their first league encounter of the 2026/27 season will take place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where Asante Kotoko will host Hearts of Oak on Matchday 13 between December 4 and 7, 2026.
The return fixture is scheduled for Matchday 30 from April 30 to May 3, 2027, with both matches expected to have major implications for the title race and qualification for continental competitions.
The two clubs will begin the new campaign with challenging opening fixtures. Asante Kotoko will travel to face newly promoted Debibi United, while Hearts of Oak will welcome Berekum Chelsea in their opening game.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin between September 4 and 7, 2026, and will run until the final weekend of May 28–31, 2027.
The latest meeting between the leadership of Kotoko and Hearts of Oak could represent a new chapter in Ghana football, as the two giants seek to use their combined influence to drive growth, professionalism and commercial development within the domestic game.
