Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has revealed that he still does not know why he was dismissed from his role as Black Stars coach earlier this year.
The 50-year-old, who returned for a second spell in charge of the national team in March 2024, was relieved of his duties in March 2026 following a string of disappointing results despite leading Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His dismissal was confirmed after the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly, bringing an end to his tenure just over two months before the start of the World Cup.
Veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz was subsequently appointed on a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the global tournament.
In an interview with German football magazine 11Freunde, Addo disclosed that he was never given an official explanation for his departure and admitted there had been growing tensions between him and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) leadership.
“Honestly, I still haven’t been given a reason [for my sacking] to this day, and honestly, I didn’t ask either,” Addo said.
He also spoke about the strained relationship with officials during his time in charge.
“There was, of course, a lot of back-and-forth between me, our federation president, and the board as well. It just felt like I could have been sacked after just one month,” he added.
Relations between Addo and the GFA reportedly worsened after Ghana’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the country’s first absence from the continental tournament in 21 years.
Despite recovering to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup, Addo’s tenure came to an abrupt end just 72 days before the tournament kicked off.
Following his exit, Addo joined FIFA’s elite Technical Study Group for the World Cup, while Queiroz took over the Black Stars and guided the team through the tournament.
