Former New Edubiase Member of Parliament, George Oduro, has revealed how Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, remained calm after being sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
According to Mr Oduro, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) displayed remarkable composure despite the court’s decision, while those around him struggled to hold back their emotions.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former MP said he broke down in tears immediately after the judgment was delivered, but Chairman Wontumi signalled to him to remain calm.
“In court, when the judgment was delivered, I started crying, but he looked at me and signalled me to stop,” Mr Oduro recounted.
He said that after the court proceedings, they accompanied Chairman Wontumi to the police station, where they spent some time before arrangements were made for his transfer to Nsawam Prison.
Mr Oduro explained that no one in their group had eaten throughout the day. Around 2:00 p.m., when authorities were preparing to transfer Wontumi to Nsawam Prison, they requested permission to buy food for him first.
“Since morning, nobody had eaten, and around 2:00 p.m., they wanted to take him to Nsawam, but we requested that we buy food for him first,” he said.
However, he noted that Chairman Wontumi appeared calm and was not emotionally overwhelmed by the development.
“But he was okay and didn’t seem troubled or devastated,” Mr Oduro added.
According to him, Wontumi encouraged them to accept the situation and move on, saying the outcome could no longer be changed.
“He said we should let go because what will happen has happened,” he stated.
Mr Oduro said after the brief interaction, the authorities proceeded to take Chairman Wontumi away, while the rest of the team returned home.
Chairman Wontumi was on Monday, July 20, sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction in a case related to illegal mining activities in Samreboi in the Western region.
