The Multimedia Group has strongly condemned the alleged assault of its Oti Regional Correspondent, Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, by military personnel enforcing a curfew in Nkwanta South, describing the incident as an attack on press freedom and the duty of journalists to report in the public interest.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 13, the media organisation said the incident occurred on Saturday evening, July 11, while the journalist was covering the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections.

According to the statement, the reporter remained at the election venue beyond the 5:00 p.m. curfew because the electoral process was still ongoing, with party members, election officials and journalists waiting for the declaration of results.

“While covering events following the New Patriotic Party’s constituency executive elections, our reporter noticed soldiers allegedly assaulting civilians for breaching the curfew and attempted to document the incident as part of his professional duties,” the statement said.

The Multimedia Group said some of the soldiers confronted the journalist over the recording of the incident and allegedly subjected him to physical assault.

“The reporter sustained injuries to his joints and other parts of his body and was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he remains on admission,” the statement added.

The organisation further stated that the reporter’s Multimedia-branded jacket was torn during the alleged assault.

It said personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the Ghana Police Service and election officials intervened to rescue the journalist and other civilians from the soldiers.

According to the statement, several other people, including NPP delegates, spectators and a commercial tricycle rider, were also affected during the incident.

The Multimedia Group condemned what it described as “the arbitrary assault on its reporter and the other victims” and called on the Military High Command to launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The organisation is also demanding that the soldiers allegedly involved be identified and sanctioned, while calling for the payment of medical expenses incurred by the injured journalist and other affected persons.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of journalists while carrying out their professional duties, particularly during security operations and public events.

ADOM BRANDS OF THE MULTIMEDIA GROUP CONDEMN ASSAULT ON OUR REPORTER AND SOME OTHER CIVILIANS AT NKWANTA SOUTH

ACCRA – Our Oti Regional Correspondent, Obrempongba Kwame Owusu, has reported to us that he has been assaulted by some soldiers deployed to enforce a curfew in Nkwanta South.

The assault took place in the evening of Saturday, 11th July, 2026, the day the New Patriotic Party held its constituency primaries across Ghana.

According to our reporter, by 5:00pm when the curfew was supposed to come into force, the election processes had not been completed, as party people and the media waited for the final results to be declared.

While the people waited for the polls results, Obrempongba learned that some soldiers were molesting some civilians over the supposed breach of the curfew.

As a journalist, he took it upon himself to capture the happenings for a news story. In this line of duty, the reporter got heckled and physically assaulted by some of the soldiers who accused him of taking videos and photographs of the exercise.

The beatings inflicted pains on his joints and some other parts of his body, requiring that he is rushed to the nearby St.Joseph’s Hospital where he has since been on admission. Obrempongba Owusu further reports that a Multimedia jacket he wore as a working gear got shredded from the beatings he received from the soldiers.

It took the intervention of some National Investigations Beurrau, and Police personnel, as well as Election officials present to rescue our reporter and the other civilians from further beatings at the hands of the soldiers.

Among the other victims of the assault were some NPP election delegates, spectators, and a commercial tricycle (okada) operator who sustained injuries in an accident while rushing home to escape further molestation.

The Adom Brands of The Multimedia Group thus:

  1. roundly condemns the assault on our colleague and all other victims of the arbitrary act.
  2. Request a thorough investigation by the Military High Command to publicly name and shame the perpetrators in addition to meting out the appropriate military sanctions to them.
  3. Demands that the culprits be surcharged with all hospital bills arising from the treatment of the reporter and indeed other victims.
