A fire completely destroyed a Yutong bus on the Mankessim–Accra Highway in the early hours of Wednesday, reducing passengers’ belongings and crates of drinks to ashes.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call at 4:34 a.m. reporting the vehicle fire and immediately dispatched a firefighting crew to the scene.

In a Facebook post, the GNFS noted that firefighters arrived six minutes later, at 4:40 a.m., and found the bus already fully engulfed in flames.

“Efforts by passengers and passers-by to extinguish the blaze before the arrival of the rescue team had proved unsuccessful,” the statement read in part.

Under the direction of the Officer-in-Charge, the firefighters deployed hoses to battle the flames and successfully brought the fire under control before completely extinguishing it at 7:12 a.m.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

After ensuring the area was safe and eliminating any risk of reignition, the crew returned to the station at 7:18 a.m.

Meanwhile, vehicle owners and transport operators have been urged to carry out regular maintenance and promptly repair electrical faults to reduce the risk of vehicle fires.
