Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, has been appointed the first substantive Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), a position that takes effect on August 1, 2026.
The appointment was approved by the University’s Governing Council at a meeting on May 26, 2026, in line with UniMAC’s statutes.
Dr Ofori Sarpong, by this appointment, becomes the ceremonial head of the university, a role that includes championing UniMAC’s strategic vision, deepening its ties with industry, and conferring degrees and other academic honours on the university’s behalf.
According to the University, the appointment reflects its confidence in Ofori Sarpong’s leadership record and his long-standing support for education and community development, adding that it expects his tenure to strengthen the university’s industry partnerships and raise its profile as Ghana’s leading institution for media, arts and communication studies.
Dr Ofori Sarpong built his name as founder of the Special Group of Companies, a conglomerate with a footprint across manufacturing, real estate, construction and strategic investments. He also holds co-ownership stakes in several other Ghanaian businesses, among them United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited, and U2 Salt Limited.
A Chartered Accountant by training, he earned a master’s degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the UK and is currently working toward a Doctor of Business Administration at France’s École Supérieure de Gestion. Barkley University has previously honoured him with a Doctor of Philosophy in Law.
His trophy cabinet spans both local and international recognition, including a Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity conferred at the United Nations headquarters in New York and a proclamation from the New York State Senate. In 2025 alone, he picked up the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year and the CEO of the Year (Consumer Drinks) honour at the Ghana CEO Summit.
Outside his business interests, Ofori Sarpong chairs the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) and sits on several other advisory boards, including those of the Millennium Excellence Foundation and the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences. He also leads the PRESEC Old Boys Association globally as its President.
