The General Secretary of the Borla Taxi and Tricycle Association, Max Jumbo, has raised concerns over severe delays in disposing of refuse, saying thousands of tricycle operators are spending days at transfer stations due to limited access to dumping sites.
Speaking on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem , Mr Jumbo said the situation has created the impression that tricycle operators are not working, even though they continue to collect waste from households across the country.
According to him, the Association has been informed that engineers are currently working on the road leading to the Mallam Transfer Station, a key waste disposal site in Accra.
“They have made us aware that the engineers are working on the road leading to the Mallam Transfer Station. I will be excited when they complete the work because a lot of cars can go there,” he said.
However, he questioned how operators are expected to cope until the road rehabilitation is completed.
“But until that is done, what do we do?” he asked.
Mr Jumbo revealed that about 4,000 tricycle riders move around communities daily collecting refuse from homes and businesses, but many are unable to dispose of the waste promptly because of congestion and the long distances to available dumping sites.
“About 4,000 tricycle riders move about town to carry rubbish every day, but because of the distance, they can spend two or three days at the transfer station,” he explained.
He added that some operators are unable to find places to dump the waste they collect, further compounding the sanitation challenge.
“Some don’t even get places to dump the rubbish, and that is why it looks like we’re not working,” he lamented.
The concerns come amid growing pressure on waste management infrastructure in the capital, with some major disposal sites becoming inaccessible or overwhelmed by increasing demand.
The delays have left many tricycle operators stranded with loads of refuse, raising fears of a worsening sanitation crisis if alternative dumping arrangements are not urgently put in place.
